LA PRAIRIE FOR CULTURAL PATRIMONY

Mondrian Evolution

La Prairie continues its partnership with the Swiss institution Fondation Beyeler to support the "Mondrian Evolution" exhibition. As art curators prepare the large Mondrian retrospective, La Prairie documents the behind-the-scenes process of bringing the exhibition to life.

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

Marking the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birth, Fondation Beyeler, with the support of La Prairie, dedicates an exhibition to the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. On view from June to October 2022, the exhibition "Mondrian Evolution" innovatively presents the creative exploration of an icon of Modern art.

COMMITMENT TO CULTURE

In its tireless pursuit of timeless beauty initiated by its founder Dr Paul Niehans, La Prairie remains faithful to its origins and creates connections with the art world and its various representatives, be they cultural institutions, established artists or emerging talents, in order to perpetuate beauty beyond the ages. The Swiss luxury house supports initiatives that strive to preserve and promote culture through a singular vision of beauty. These initiatives speak to the House’s commitment to giving back – purposeful, relevant gestures of support and patronage, from Switzerland to the world.

LA PRAIRIE'S CULTURAL INITIATIVES

MONDRIAN EVOLUTION 2022
“Mondrian Evolution” opening at the Fondation Beyeler on June 5 and on view through October 9 2022, brings together over eighty works by the great master of abstraction. The exhibition dedicated to his artistic development – one of the most comprehensive of its kind to date – is supported by La Prairie. Fondation Beyeler and La Prairie come together as two Swiss entities sharing their commitment to quality and precision – joining forces to inspire a greater appreciation of the arts. In addition, as partner of “Mondrian Evolution”, La Prairie celebrates the culmination of its two-year long engagement in the Piet Mondrian Conservation Project, which was one of the Fondation Beyeler’s important steps in the development of the exhibition.

DECODING MONDRIAN 2021
Furthering its longstanding commitment to and intrinsic link with the world of art, La Prairie entered the second year of the Piet Mondrian Conservation Project in partnership with the Fondation Beyeler in 2021. These conservation efforts not only ensure that the work of Mondrian is preserved for future generations but the publication of all research findings also allows art historians and the greater public to gain a better understanding of this preeminent figure of the 20th century and his ongoing impact on visual culture. Painstaking research and analysis have resulted in several compelling discoveries contributing to the continuous research on how Mondrian painted and what he ultimately strove for in his art.
CONSERVATION PROJECT 2020
In 2020, as part of La Prairie’s Commitment to Culture efforts, the House partnered with the Fondation Beyeler, one of the most prestigious art institutions in Switzerland, to support the Piet Mondrian Conservation Project. As artworks are subject to the effects of time, central to the vision and ongoing mission of the Fondation Beyeler is their Department of Art Conservation, which undertakes the vital role of ensuring ongoing cultural patrimony. The Fondation Beyeler’s conservators sit at the frontier of artwork preservation, their holistic approach going beyond the realm of art restoration. In partnership with La Prairie, the Fondation Beyeler employed in-depth research and a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure the longevity of Mondrian’s precious artworks.

NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE
In 2021, La Prairie partnered with MoMA PS1 Museum in New York as the patron of the "Niki de Saint Phalle: Structures for Life" retrospective, featuring over 200 works created from the mid-1960s until the artist’s death, including sculptures, prints, drawings, jewellery, films and archival materials. Highlighting de Saint Phalle’s interdisciplinary approach and engagement with key social and political issues, the exhibition focused on works that she created to transform environments, individuals and society. Through this patronage, La Prairie honours Saint Phalle’s audacious and visionary feminist spirit – her defiance of social norms and her willingness to break the codes both in her personal life and work.

ECAL 2022
Through the continued partnership with the renowned Swiss University of Art & Design, La Prairie nurtures creativity and promotes emerging talents shaping the future of smart design. In the second year of partnership with ECAL in 2022, under the creative leadership of designers Panter&Tourron, six students developed their vision of the luxury packaging of tomorrow using La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Luxe Cream folding box as their starting point. The students were invited to re-imagine the secondary packaging using a more sustainable approach and explore the possibilities that innovative materials, design techniques and technology offered while preserving the elevated product experience, inherent to the brand.
ECAL 2021
In 2021 La Prairie joined forces with ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne and proudly contributed to nourishing the next generation of artists and designers. As part of the partnership with the school – rooted in common values of creativity, Swiss aesthetics and craftsmanship – La Prairie has collaborated with students of ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, under the creative leadership of designer Sabine Marcelis. For this collaboration, the students were invited to design an object of design that expresses the brand’s vision of Swissness – the purity, precision and timelessness inherent to the land of the House’s origins.

GRAVITY FLOW
This latest cultural endeavour of the House supports Douglas Mandry’s artistic mission to raise awareness on the importance of preserving the beauty of nature and its endangered landscapes. A sculptural work titled "Gravity Flow", developed as a public installation displayed in Swiss nature, addresses the urgent topic of climate change and its visible impact on Swiss glaciers. A series of five sculptures made of recycled glass reproduce the contours of cavities - the result of ice melt - that can be found beneath the surface of glaciers. To study the shape of these cavities, Mandry joined ETH’s Glaciology department Professor Daniel Farinotti on an expedition to the Rhône glacier in Switzerland. By introducing a 3D scanner into the shafts, the researchers gathered the necessary data to create a digital model of several cavities that inspired the shape for the final artworks.
